The short version: Almost certainly not in the way you're imagining. The ads that follow your conversations come from data tracking, not live transcription. But apps do reach for your microphone in the background, Android keeps no record of it, and you're entitled to check rather than guess.

Everyone has the story. You mention a brand of running shoe to a friend at dinner. You haven't searched for it, haven't typed it anywhere. The next morning, there it is in your feed.

It feels like proof. It's the single most common privacy question people ask about their phones, and it deserves a straight answer rather than either of the two lazy ones — the "you're paranoid" dismissal, or the "they're recording everything" panic.

What's almost certainly happening instead

The honest answer is that ad targeting has become good enough to look like surveillance without needing a microphone at all.

Someone near you searched for it. Advertising platforms know which devices share a location, an IP address, or a Wi-Fi network. Your dinner companion looks up the shoes on the way home. You're in the same targeting cluster. You get the ad, they get the ad, and only you find it uncanny.

Your profile already predicted it. The pages you visit, the apps you install, the videos you finish, the things you buy, your age bracket, your postcode — modelled together, these predict interest with unsettling accuracy. A conversation about running shoes usually follows weeks of behaviour that already flagged you as someone about to buy running shoes.

Frequency illusion does the rest. You see thousands of ads a day and register almost none of them. The moment a topic is live in your head, you notice the one ad that matches. The other 900 don't get remembered, so they don't get counted.

Data brokers fill the gaps. Loyalty cards, purchase histories, and app SDKs feed a market that resells audience segments. Data you handed over in one place shapes what you see in a completely different one.

There's also a practical argument against the microphone theory. Continuously streaming and transcribing audio from billions of phones would be enormously expensive, would show up in battery and network usage, and would be visible to anyone doing traffic analysis. Researchers have gone looking for it repeatedly. What they keep finding is tracking, not listening.

Where the reassurance runs out

Here's the part that usually gets skipped, and it's why the question won't go away.

"Mainstream apps aren't transcribing your dinner conversation" is true. It is not the same statement as "no app on your phone is using your microphone in the background."

That second claim is one nobody can make on your behalf, because:

So the right question isn't the philosophical one. It's the empirical one: which apps on this phone have actually used the microphone, when, and for how long?

How to check your Android phone

Three checks, in increasing order of usefulness. All of them take a few minutes.

1. Look at the last 24 hours

  2. Tap Privacy — on Samsung it's under Security & privacy
  3. Tap Privacy Dashboard
  4. Tap Microphone

You'll get a timeline of which apps touched the microphone in the last day. This is the fastest reality check available, and most people find at least one entry they can't explain.

2. Audit who even has permission

3. Watch it over time

This is the one the built-in tools can't do, and it's the only one that actually answers the question.

A single microphone access tells you nothing. Ten accesses at 3am across a fortnight, while the screen was locked, from an app that has no business recording anything — that's a pattern, and a pattern is evidence. You cannot see patterns in a log that resets every 24 hours.

What a real answer looks like

To move from suspicion to knowledge, a record needs four things for every sensor access:

That last one reframes everything else. A video call app with fifty microphone accesses during the day is doing its job. The same app with four accesses while your phone charged overnight is a question worth asking out loud.
