What Android's green dot doesn't tell you

The short version: Android's privacy indicator is real and useful, but it lasts about a second, keeps no permanent history, and never tells you how long an app used your camera or whether your screen was locked at the time.

If you're on Android 12 or later, you've probably noticed a small green dot appear in the top corner of your screen. It shows up when an app starts using your camera or microphone, and it was a genuine improvement to Android when it arrived.

It's also one of the most misunderstood features on your phone — because most people assume it's doing more than it is.

What the green dot actually does

The indicator does exactly one thing: it tells you a sensor is in use right now. Pull down the notification shade while it's showing and you'll see which app is responsible.

That's the whole feature. It's a live status light, not a record.

The three things it won't tell you

It won't tell you what happened while you weren't looking. This is the big one. The indicator is only useful if you happen to be staring at your screen at the moment it appears. If an app activates your microphone while your phone is face-down on a table, or in your pocket, or on your nightstand at 3am, the dot appears to nobody and vanishes. Nothing anywhere records that it happened.

It won't tell you how long. There's a meaningful difference between an app touching your microphone for 200 milliseconds to check a permission and holding it open for four minutes. The indicator treats both identically.

It won't tell you whether your screen was locked. An app using your camera while you're actively using it is expected. The same app using your camera while your phone is locked in a drawer is a different matter entirely. The green dot draws no distinction.

What about the Privacy Dashboard?

Android 12 also added a Privacy Dashboard, which does keep a limited history. It's worth knowing how to find it:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Privacy — on Samsung and some other manufacturers it's under Security & privacy
  3. Tap Privacy Dashboard
  4. Tap Camera or Microphone to see which apps accessed it

Go and look at yours now — it's genuinely worth two minutes, and most people are surprised by at least one entry.

But the dashboard has hard limits. It only covers the last 24 hours. It shows you a timeline of which apps accessed a sensor, but not for how long. It doesn't record your lock state. And on several manufacturer skins it's been moved, renamed, or buried deep enough that most people never find it.

Twenty-four hours is the part that matters most. If you want to answer a question like "has this app been using my microphone regularly, or was that a one-off?", you need weeks of history. Android throws it away daily.

Does this mean apps are spying on you?

Usually, no — and it's worth being precise here, because this topic attracts a lot of nonsense.

The famous experience of talking about something and then seeing an ad for it is, in the overwhelming majority of cases, not your microphone. It's data tracking: your browsing, your location, what people near you searched for, and inference from a startlingly detailed advertising profile. That's a real privacy problem, but it's a different one.

What is true is more mundane and more checkable. Apps hold permissions they don't need. Apps access sensors in the background for reasons that are perfectly legitimate but that nobody explained to you. Occasionally, an app behaves in a way its description doesn't account for.

The honest position isn't "you're being spied on". It's that right now, you have no way to check — and you should be able to.

What checking properly looks like

A useful record answers four questions for every single sensor access:

That fourth one changes how you read everything else. An app with a hundred camera accesses while you were using it is a camera app doing its job. The same app with three accesses while your phone was locked overnight is a question worth asking.

And crucially, the record has to persist. A privacy indicator you have to catch in the act isn't a record at all.
